3 Body Problem is the latest TV series from David Benioff and DB Weiss – the showrunners of Game of Thrones. And they brought three old friends with them who switched from fantasy to sci-fi with them: John Bradley (Samwell Tarley), Liam Cunningham (Ser Davos Seaworth) and Jonathan Pryce (High Sparrow).
We were allowed to conduct an interview with the cast of the new Netflix series. Among other things, we wanted to know what actually convinced you to become part of 3 Body Problem.
We would need a VR game like this in real life
John Bradley, who stars as Jack Rooney in the sci-fi series, has just taken a liking to the technological aspect of 3 Body Problem. He explicitly enjoyed the mysterious VR game that fascinates and captivates scientists all over the world in the series.
Without giving too much away: Said game appears to be centuries ahead of humanity’s technology. The players end up in a truly realistic simulation in which they can even feel, smell and taste their surroundings.
Of course, we won’t spoil what exactly this is all about at this point. For Bradley, this aspect of 3 Body Problem was particularly exciting because it meant a lot of freedom in the staging of the story.
In my opinion, the idea of the VR game is a stroke of genius! […] This gives us the opportunity to really show anything we want on the screen. We can send our characters through world history or into the future, providing fresh perspectives and having them talk to anyone we can think of. So we don’t have to bow to the logic that other TV series are bound to.
This trick alone works for David [Benioff]Alex [Woo] and then [Weiss] levered the door off its hinges to let her imagination run wild. But our colleagues, who are responsible for set design, costumes and effects, can also let off steam. […] I think this fact makes our series unique in some ways.
The official trailer for 3 Body Problem already shows how this is presented visually:

3 Body Problem is also intended to warn against the use of technology
While John Bradley is enthusiastic about the technology presented in 3 Body Problem, his colleague from the Game of Thrones days is a little more critical of the topic. Liam Cunningham moves out of the TV series a teaching that, in his opinion, concerns all of humanity.
Cunningham explains while describing his character Thomas Wade:
Our two characters [meine und die von Benedict Wong] have a clear goal in mind: there is a threat, we need a plan, we must execute that plan and we must succeed. The existential/philosophical lies more closely [bei den anderen Figuren der Geschichte]. […] The things we work on are supposed to advance humanity – but what do we really use them for?
I think this is a problem that many scientists have to deal with: They create something incredible and it is taken away for something vile. We should be careful when using our technology because it can be used for good or misused for evil. And if we don’t use it for something good, it can destroy us all.
