While most movie fans think of “The Handmaiden” and “Legacy” (two excellent films) when Park Chan-wook is mentioned, he has been working on TV projects outside of Korea for several years, helping to develop “The Handmaiden” with the original film’s director. Snowpiercer” and other shows Bong Joon-ho (“Parasite”) directed and produced HBO’s limited series “The Sympathizer,” starring Robert Downey Jr., who just won an Oscar for Oppenheimer.
Scott Herbst, executive vice president and head of script development at Lionsgate, said: “This film adaptation of the ‘Oldboy’ franchise will deliver raw emotional power, iconic fight scenes and Heartfelt style, these are the things that make this film a classic.” Ideally, this new adaptation will be a fresh take on the story rather than a diluted, more accessible iteration of the original.
Oldboy (2003) tells the story of a man who is imprisoned and cut off from the outside world for 15 years for unknown reasons. After his release, he spends five days trying to find h is kidnappers and learn why his life was taken. This is part of Parker’s themed revenge trilogy, which includes Sympathy for Mr. Revenge and Sympathy for Ms. Revenge, all of which, I assure you, are shocking thrillers that will stay with you long after you first watch them. It will linger in your mind for a while.
