News JVTech OLED vs Mini-LED: I previewed the best Samsung 4K TVs of 2023 and one thing shocked me
On Thursday February 16, 2023, Samsung invited me (as well as my colleagues from all other tech newsrooms in France) to a large showroom near Paris. All the major innovations of the first half of 2023 were there! This article is dedicated to my specialty: 4K TVs. One of the models really shocked me.
I’ve only seen Samsung’s top-of-the-line 4K TVs in 2023!
Small warning before we go into detail. The TVs I’ve had preview access to are everything the brand says “flagships”,
- Here’s the range QN90 for the 4K Neo QLED TV part (Mini-LED technology, we’ll get back to that).
- From the assortment QN900 for 8K TV part.
- From the assortment S95 for the 4K OLED TV part. More precisely QD-OLED.
All of these ranges were already the flagships of 2022. TVs, just like smartphones, are updated every year. Just as we went from the Samsung Galaxy S22 to the Samsung Galaxy S23 mobile phone level, we will start from the Samsung QN90B 2022 to the Samsung QN90C in 2023 for televisions.
Samsung QN90C: 4K Neo Qled TVs are still a hit thanks to mini-LED technology
I’m passionate about television and image-related technologies in general. Of all the technologies on the market, there is one that I love more than anything: OLED.
Before we continue, let’s introduce a few barbaric terms. The OLED makes it possible to reach an infinite level of contrast, so perfectly black blacks. It does this by using pixels that emit their own light instead of a permanently lit backlight panel. A black pixel is simply gone.
Mini-LED, found in Neo-QLED TVs (which combine this techno with Samsung’s famous “Quantum Dots”), still needs a backlight. Small twist: the backlight is made up of diodes, which are 40 times smaller than traditional LED TVs. Better : these diodes are controlled quite finely by an AI that adjusts the backlight to match the projected image.
The QN90C isn’t the first mini LED TV or even Neo QLED I’ve seen in my life, but it’s the one that has impressed me the most so far. The panel is ultra bright, it cannot mark and the contrast remains super high. For gamers, this is undoubtedly one of the best TVs of 2023. Especially since it comes with a 144Hz panel like a gaming monitor.
The QN90C ranges from small sizes (43 and 50 inches) to huge 98-inch panels or about 2.5 meters diagonal. Available in spring!
Samsung QN900C: Few people are willing to upgrade to 8K TVs
We’ll quickly move on to the QN900C. Samsung shows that the brand knows how to build very good 8K TVs, but these products are currently reserved for a niche audience. An 8K TV is not uninteresting since it’s possible to afford a much larger screen for a relatively small recoil distance. And even if native 8K content is rare, by 2023 television processors will be powerful enough to impressively upscale (boost, if you like) the quality of a 4K picture to 8K.
The fact is that a TV like the QN900C is still very expensive and European standards make life difficult for 8K TVs. To display twice the pixel density of 4K TVs, 8K models consume a lot of power. So much so that manufacturers have had to limit the power of their war machines to comply with old continent legislation.
Anyway, with its Neo-QLED 8K panel and One Connect box, the big QN900C I had in front of me was of the most beautiful impact. People who can afford to be among the best in the world will be delighted, this TV exudes premium.
Samsung OLED S95C: The development of QD-OLED technology shocked me
I took care of testing Samsung’s first 4K OLED TV, the S95B. Do not hesitate to consult it if you want to read my detailed opinion on this beautiful baby. Spoiler alert: Samsung has made a sensational entry into the OLED market and the S95C is a huge success.
Long story short, Samsung Display engineers have innovated. With the S95B, they offered their own version of OLED technology, which was eventually merged with the QLED technology that Samsung loves so much. So in the QD-OLED we find the perfect black (infinite contrast), lack of blooming and huge viewing angles of the OLED mixed with the brilliant colors of the QLED’s Quantum Dots.
In just a year, Samsung has greatly improved its 4K QD OLED TV. I was hooked.
- The brand announces a Brightness peak in HDR at 2000 candelas per square meter, twice as many as last year. It’s outrageous, especially when you know that just under 2 years ago, all 4K OLED TVs suffered from lack of brightness (nobody reached 1000 candelas per square meter back then). In the real world, I’ve seen with my own eyes that the S95C spits out at least as much light as the Neo-QLED models placed alongside it. Insane when you know that the great advantage of Neo-QLED was its brightness.
- The S95C is equipped with a suitcase Slim One Connect. Great pride of Samsung, this box that we talked about above allows you to deport all the connections of the TV. Aesthetically very practical and above all ergonomic. If you want to hang the TV on the wall, that’s bliss.
- The S95C is compatible 144 Hertz, a display frequency comparable to a PC gamer’s screen! For gamers, there simply isn’t a better TV on the market. As a reminder, the S95B went up to 120Hz.
- The audio level also improves. We have a 70 watt 4.1.2 system that is obviously compatible with Dolby Atmos. Samsung even has it Wireless Dolby Atmos! And that goes for all the models we talked about today.
I really didn’t think Samsung would do the same thing in 2023. My colleagues and I felt like we had the best 4K TV model of the year ahead of us. I don’t know all the models from the competition yet, but they have a serious customer in front of them!
Availability level, expect a spring release of this TV in 3 different sizes : 55 inch, 65 inch and 77 inch. For the price, there doesn’t seem to be anything below $2500, but as you know, there can be promos, or even phat pre-order bonuses.
