Anyone who has played Team Ninja’s masterful and rigorous Nioh games is well aware of their weapon stance system. Stances cover all weapons, with low, medium, and high options for everyone.
So far, we don’t quite know what Rise of the RoninThe system version (if any) will be required. However, thanks to the latest look at the game, we have a pretty good idea.

Sony has been ramping up its promotion of Rise of Ronin in recent weeks, and with Rise of Ronin launching on PS5 on March 22, Sony has released a new video and revealed more information about the game.
This latest trailer is part of a series of videos, each focusing on an aspect of the upcoming action RPG, and this one is entirely focused on combat. While we’ve certainly seen combat footage in the past, this video keeps things interesting. Team Ninja has discussed Rise of Ronin’s combat style before, but has never really shared much information about what it really is or how it works. The trailer shows that the fighting style is very similar to Nioh’s famous weapon stance system.
The trailer shows off the melee weapon on display in high, mid and low stances. Each pose seems to retain some, if not all, of the features found in the Nioh games. For example, a low stance appears to have the fastest attack animation, while a high stance is much slower and deals more devastating damage.
However, it’s unclear how players will be able to switch between sides, or if they will need to be acquired somehow. Presumably, they’ll work just like they do in Nioh; essentially always available to players.
In terms of weapons, the footage shows some standard weapons such as katana swords and spears, but there are also more period-appropriate bayonets with some ranged components. Speaking of which, the time period in which Rise of Ronin takes place offers a wide range of options, such as different kinds of guns.
Of course, the standard bow still exists. The grappling hook is the most interesting, as it seems more like a tool to close the gap on your enemies than a weapon in its own right. There’s obviously a lot of Sekiro inspiration in some of the stealth and open-world exploration sections, too.
The best part of the trailer is coming; here we see how both options can be used simultaneously, creating some truly powerful combos with incredible fighting potential compared to Nioh.
“Rise of Ronin” will be released on PS5 on March 22.
