The PlayStation VR2 has only been on the market for a little over a year, but it sounds like Sony is already reducing its investment in VR gaming.
Many companies have tried their hand at VR, but none of them have really taken off as much as people had hoped. The Meta Quest was quite successful, but that was partly because it had no annoying wires and also because it was relatively cheap (and you didn’t need an expensive PC). Last year, Sony continued to try to get a piece of the VR pie with the PS VR2, a follow-up VR headset designed for the PS5. But things didn’t seem to go well, and earlier this year it was reported that Sony had paused production of the headset because it needed to work through a backlog of orders first.

Now, a new report from Android Central claims that, according to a source who spoke to The Verge, Sony appears to be cutting funding for VR games. The report paraphrases the source, but condenses it to: “The chances of Sony developing VR games in the future will be very small.” Another source seems to claim that Sony is currently only developing two PS VR2 games, which doesn’t sound very promising for the future of the headset.
Assuming the report is true, it’s not surprising. It does retail for a whopping $550, which is higher than the launch price of the PS5 itself. Sony has finally introduced the ability to use the PS VR2 on PC, though that costs $60 more anyway, so it’s not particularly ideal. Perhaps it’ll find new life there, but with so many other PC VR headsets on the market and so few VR games for the PS5, it begs the question: why would you buy one? Maybe the recently announced Behemoth will save the day.
