In our first “yes, it’s totally normal” 2022 story, we’re very happy to report that the circus has just been performed under the legendMegalovania tracks in the audience francis. Yes, you read that right.
Some background: Yesterday, ol’ Pontifex hosted the Italian circus Rony Roller as part of his weekly regular audience. As you can see in the Youtube video embedded below (taken from the Vatican News Channel), the circus ends with a thrilling performance on the theme of Sans (also known as Megolovania).
You can see the entire audience segment below, but the funniest part (including fire juggling and Undertale) starts at 53:28. If you want to jump straight to Megolovania, go to 1:04:40.
It’s also not the first time a circus has performed for the Venerable (though it’s the first time video game music has been in front of an audience). Back in 2006, the troupe also performed for Pope Benedict XVI, and most recently they did a performance for Francis in 2017. It remains to be seen whether they’ll be invited back after his face turned sour on this show.
So does Pope Francis like one of Undertale’s most famous tracks? Well, after the show, he said a show like that”[put] We engage with beauty, which always brings us happiness”, before concluding that “beauty is a way to find master” (thanks, TheGamer). So…he’s saying that you can get through Undertale Looking for God? Sorry to explain, but well, he is!
Oddly enough, this isn’t the first Pope x Undertale mashup: Back in 2016, YouTuber MatPat was invited to a Vatican summit to discuss how the internet “brings people together” (hmm). MatPat was told he should bring a gift to Pope Francis…so MatPat got him a copy of Undertale.
why? Well, the Pope declared 2016 “the Catholic Church’s Year of Mercy, a time to celebrate forgiveness and compassion that might otherwise choose to hurt someone,” and MatPat says the eternal theme in Undertale is compassion. Go ahead.
What’s destined for the next Pope x Undertale? Maybe he’ll make a cameo at Toby Fox’s next game, bringing the whole relationship between the Vatican and the game into a wonderful and divine full circle.
