We may tend to forget it, but this RPG can claim the title of GOTY 2024. And it’s neither Final Fantasy 7 Rebirth nor Metaphor ReFantazio.
The end of the year is approaching and we’re slowly starting to take stock of the games that have impressed us since January… And honestly, there are people vying for the title of GOTY 2024! On the reference site Metacritic, An impressive top trio – the Elden Ring DLC, Astro Bot and Metaphor ReFantazio – share the podium with 94/100 each. In the top field we also find Final Fantasy 7 Rebirth, the indie gems UFO 50 and Animal Well and Tekken 8. But the rest of the ranking should not be neglected either. Additionally, at number 29, there is an excellent RPG that has just reached an important milestone.
A studio like no other
This role-playing game is Unicorn Overlord, the latest creation from VanillaWare. This Japanese studio has an unusual specialty… Change genres regularly and shine every time (with the addition of always great artistic direction)! As proof we want Muramasa: The Demon Blade, a very good action game full of Japanese folklore, or more recently 13 Sentinels: Aegis Rim, an excellent mix of visual novel and tactical role-playing game. Unicorn Overlord is no exception. We also recently learned that the title has sold more than a million copies. A great success. It’s available for PS4, PS5, Xbox Series, One and Switch (there’s no PC version).
A role-playing game with insane wealth
Here we play a certain Alain, the legitimate heir to the throne of Cornia. He wants revenge on Glavius, a bloodthirsty warrior who overthrew the capital Grand Corinne ten years earlier. Our hero will therefore reconquer the lands that rightfully belong to him – continent by continent – accompanied by heroes of different classes (Lord, Legionnaire, Sorcerer, Cleric).
To bring all of this to life, VanillaWare relies on a mix of open world exploration and, on the combat side, real-time strategy, turn-based,car battler (For the latter, think Dota Underlords). Roughly speaking, in a confrontation you have to move your units in real time, and when one of your battalions encounters an enemy formation, time freezes and passes turn by turn.car battler.
