Almost two decades have passed since Battlestar Galactica last flickered across the television screens. But Battlestar Galactica is set to make another comeback in the foreseeable future. Derek Simonds, the creative mind behind the thriller series The Sinner, is taking the helm of the Battlestar Galactica reboot as showrunner.
What we know about the Battlestar Galactica reboot
Simonds, who now holds the roles of writer, executive producer and showrunner, replaces Michael Lesslie (The Hunger Games: The Ballad of Songbirds and Snakes). Under the command of producer Sam Esmail, the mastermind behind Mr. Robot, the upcoming remake promises to both maintain old strengths and explore new aspects.
Esmail emphasizes in an interview with Joblo.comwanting to put the project in the hands of an experienced showrunner like Simonds, while he himself takes on an advisory role:
I know myself as a filmmaker and I don’t know if I’m suited to hard science fiction. And Battlestar needs the best of the best. But I love the world and what Ron Moore is doing with it [Version von 2004] has made […] I knew that if we found the right partners to write and direct the series, I could be on the other end and say, “Okay, I think it’s working; it’s the same magic I felt in the Ron Moore version.”
There are also first clues about the plot: Artificial intelligence in particular should play an important role. Esmail suggests that the series will look at the relationship between humans and technology in a new light, addressing current developments and concerns.
However, exact details are not yet known – and whether the Cylons in the new series are the great-grandchildren of ChatGPT will become clear when the series starts.
It remains to be seen when production will begin and when a release can be expected. However, producer Esmail expressed optimism about the project’s progress, especially after the end of the Hollywood strikes, which had previously caused delays to almost all productions.
Now we’re looking forward to your opinions: Are you interested in a reboot of Battlestar Galactica? The acclaimed series from 2004 is, after all, one of the best sci-fi series of all time. Let us know in the comments section!
