Clones are a controversial topic – and not just because they appear in your Tinder profile as a hobby Shoot Jedi
list. On the one hand, Disney has made a real effort over the last 10 years to create many exciting stories about clone legends like Rex, Cody and Co. On the other hand, a lot was lost due to the wipe of the old Expanded Universe.
If you want to experience the old Expanded Universe in its absolute glory, then definitely play Star Wars: Republic Commando. Yes, the elite clone soldiers are officially part of the canon under Disney, but in the series they function more as souped-up doorstops.
Not so in Star Wars: Republic Commando! Here you take command of an elite clone unit and shoot your way through one of the best Star Wars shooters of all time. And there’s more: In the current Steam sale for International Star Wars Day on May 4th, Republic Commando is reduced more than ever before. By 75 percent to just 2.43 dollars.
Who is Republic Commando worth it for?
Republic Commando doesn’t tell a deep story, instead you follow a four-man squad of elite clone soldiers deep into the trenches of the Clone Wars from Star Wars 2 and 3. You play a total of three single-player campaigns, starting with the Battle of Geonosis via an abandoned Venator cruiser until the final days of the Clone Wars on the Wookie home planet of Kashyyyk.

Republic Commando – The most tragic Star Wars shooter
- One of Republic Commando’s great strengths is its atmosphere. Here you can really experience the dark side of the Clone Wars, feel the tension before battle or the pure panic when you stalk alone through a droid control ship where every sound means death.
- In terms of gameplay mechanics, the shooter is still exactly right even 20 years later Mix of tactics and arcade: I give my squad mates rudimentary commands, for example using the sniper for control fire, but ultimately I don’t have to read a manual in order to successfully shoot my way through the levels.
- Die Gunfights are just fun! I kill a super battle droid by first shooting the chrome plates and then targeting weak points. Every opponent demands the right tactics from me.
- Die three campaigns set wonderfully unique accents. Geonosis plays like absolute battle chaos, while the supposedly abandoned Venator cruiser almost exudes a horror feeling.
Of course, Republic Commando wasn’t a perfect shooter back then, the weapon selection was quite poor, the story was so slow, but even 20 years later every Star Wars fan should have played this game. The clones never got better after that.
