With The Alter, a survival game was announced in 2022 that might initially seem like typical genre fare: We are stranded on a hostile planet and have to stay afloat with the help of a moving base.
In fact, a central game mechanic is based on a completely new idea and also brings with it a portion of sci-fi adventure. Now The Alter is showing gameplay for the first time and also revealing the release period.
How does The Alter work?
In order to survive, you have to operate a moving high-tech base in the unusual survival game, which can actually only be controlled by a specialized crew. Because you always on the run from the deadly rays of the sun it is essential that the station stays moving. But your goal is to escape the planet at some point.
Fortunately You are able to create copies of yourself using a rare substance, which are based on choosing a different path at important moments in your life. For example, you have completed your studies, committed yourself to a relationship, or moved away from your home country.

Based on these decisions, your variants will have certain abilities, which you need to operate the base. But they are also independent people who have certain character traits, wishes and ideas. This can then lead to conflicts with you and other variants, as explained above in the new trailer.
In terms of play, you can expect a kind of mix of exploring the planet and managing the base. You’ll probably have to decide what new variants to create, where to use them, and how to respond to conflicts. The Alter is scheduled to be released this year for PC, PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X/S.
This year is already great for survival fans: two highly acclaimed survival games, Palworld and Enshrouded, were released in the first two months of 2024.
