If there’s one Marvel character that fans love but seems to be underutilized since Disney took over, it’s The Punisher. Nevertheless, the superhero and his newest interpreter prepare to return.
Jon Bernthal, known for his portrayal of Frank Castle, aka Punisher, in the Netflix series, is eyeing a return to the Marvel Cinematic Universe. Rumors about him have multiplied recently, especially since the reintroduction of Daredevil, played by Charlie Cox, into the MCU through a brand new series in the form of a reboot. Actors Deborah Ann Woll and Elden Henson also recently took on their roles as Karen Page and Franklin Foggy Nelson. Hope is therefore great, and Bernthal speaks on this topic.
Punisher: The Return
Jon Bernthal, famous for his role in the second season of Daredevil and its accompanying Netflix series, has mastered the changes in the Marvel Universe, especially with the move from the MCU series to Disney Plus, where the content is aimed more at a family audience are.
However, the trend seems to be changing with the release of series with a more adult tone, such as Echo, which saw the return of Charlie Cox in the role of Daredevil and Vincent D’Onofrio as the Kingpin. This development could signal Bernthal’s impending return to the Punisher role.
In an interview with Collider, Bernthal expressed his commitment to the character of Frank Castle and his intention to respect his essence. «IThere’s a reason why this character is so well received. He lives in me and I am very attached to him»he emphasized.
When it comes to his reappearance in the current MCU and Daredevil: Born Again, Bernthal is aware of the challenges ahead and emphasizes the need to stay true to the original. «If we do it, we must do it well while respecting the integrity of the base material»he insisted.
Violence in Marvel’s MCU?
Although there is violence in the Marvel Universe, it is often toned down, unlike what was featured in the Netflix series The Punisher, which explored themes of corruption, pimp rings, drugs, etc. As for the MCU and Disney, the question is whether they are willing to portray a hero, a former marine who uses methods as brutal as decapitation with a combat knife, as in the final scene of The Punisher season 2. This is a difficult point to assess. But if there is a character who deserves to retain his authenticity and his toughness, it is certainly this one.
