Amazon Prime is preparing to welcome a disaster movie as Hollywood knows how to produce. Even if the latest attempts are not resounding successes, the feature film, which falls like a meteorite, could well provide a surprise. While we shouldn’t expect a groundbreaking show, Gerard Butler’s latest project takes a different approach.
This film, titled Greeland: The Last Refuge, has just landed on Amazon Prime’s Spanish service and may be landing with us soon. The plot tells how a fighting couple (John and Allison Garrity) hide the situation from their diabetic son Nathan. As the family is gradually torn apart, the information heralds the arrival of an interstellar comet that will make a very close approach to Earth. It consists of thousands of fragments and one of them hits the city of Tampa hard. The colossal shockwave can be felt thousands of miles away. The problem ? The thousands of remaining fragments will collide with the planet and John Garrity will be chosen to join a nuclear shelter. But while his family at the military base is ready to board, John learns that his son’s diabetes means he has to go alone. He will then fight to reach mankind’s last refuge, Greenland.
This film is a bit reminiscent of a film like 2012, but it has a very different reading. If the spectacular moments are in the game, the feature film relies above all on the psychology of the characters to tell the events.
The last cradle of mankind
On the critical side, the film’s intimate approach tends to be seductive. While some considered him very American, many praised his boldness compared to his peers. Grossing $60 million, Greeland: The Last Refuge is an effective feature film that hasn’t paid off. It deserves our attention because of its style and it is true that we are linked to the fate of the Garrity family. It remains to be seen if the film will arrive on Amazon Prime anytime soon, but its presence on the Spanish service suggests it will soon.
