Although the OnePlus 7 released in July lacked technological innovation, the 7 Pro received a lot of praise. With the new OnePlus 7T, manufacturers are now focusing more on the main models and eliminating some criticism. Considering the improvement of the equipment, there are almost no problems with pure model maintenance and minimum upgrades; after all, it can even rival 7 Pro now. Now we provide you with an overview of the most important changes.

design

The gratifying innovation is the changed design, because in the latter two models OnePlus 6T and 7 are almost identical. The wheel hub has not been reinvented, but the new phone inherits the matte glass back cover of the 7 Pro and now has a round, larger camera module. There are three cameras now, and there will be more in the future. However, the 3-in-1 camera obviously protrudes from the case, and the transition is somewhat sharp. A protective cover, including a simple silicone sleeve, can make up for this shortcoming, but it can also cover the matte back.

According to OnePlus, the 7T is again protected by water and dust. However, there is no guarantee of protection and there is no official IP certification. In the test, we placed the phone in a puddle and then exposed it to heavy rain without damage. Even videos on YouTube can be played perfectly after 30 minutes underwater. Since water damage is not covered by the warranty, we do not recommend that you deliberately immerse it in water.

The shape of the phone has also changed slightly: OnePlus 7T is now narrower and longer, which is related to the display. The format of the screen is 20: 9, and increased from 6.4 inches to 6.55 inches. This increase is due to the additional display components capable of achieving a refresh rate of 90 Hz. So far, this particularity is only available on the 7 Pro and certain gaming smartphones. Since the display update speed is faster, the screen content looks smoother and subjective, so the mobile phone responds faster-this is an obvious advantage compared to other luxury mobile phones.

Compared with the 7 Pro, the display of the 7T is again resolved in Full HD, and the sides are not curved, but flat. The side edges are still relatively thin. On paper, the size difference of the display is now only 0.1 inches, but due to the narrow format, the 7T feels easier to manage by comparison-but it is still very large.

The AMOLED panel supports HDR 10+ and reaches a maximum brightness of about 1,000 candela per square meter. Combined with a format that is almost close to the 21: 9 aspect ratio of the movie theater, "Netflix fans" will definitely be worth the money. There is still a water drop slot at the top of the screen, but we are not bothered. Compared with its predecessor, OnePlus has reduced the gap by more than 30%. In addition to the resolution, OnePlus once again installed one of the best monitors on the market. In addition, the screen of a phablet is less modern, but it is more practical in everyday life than a curved display.

The second major upgrade of OnePlus 7T is the triple camera. Here, manufacturers rely on the combination of the main lens, the wide-angle lens and the telescope head that are now common in the luxury class. Except for the latter, the camera specifications are consistent with the OnePlus 7 Pro specifications. The details are as follows:

Due to the different focal lengths, you can take various photos and videos. OnePlus also added macro mode, and night mode has been significantly improved. Recently, there is a "super stable" mode for video recording-after activation, the maximum resolution is reduced from 4K at 60 frames per second to Full HD at 30 frames per second. You can only record video with a super wide-angle camera at a lower resolution.

Overall, we were very impressed with the photos of the main camera, because OnePlus has obviously improved the software and image processing. However, the telephoto camera is not really convincing because it usually lacks sharpness and the colors in some photos are severely distorted. We have inserted a few examples in the gallery. Selfies work well on mobile phones, but not great.

Power, memory and battery

Qualcomm processor Snapdragon 855 is replaced by a newer version with a slightly higher clock frequency. In comparison, the graphics performance of the installed Snapdragon 855+ should be increased by 15%. You may not feel this difference. Incidentally, there is 8 GB of memory and 128 GB of fast UFS 3.0 mass storage available. No memory expansion is possible. Therefore, compared with the OnePlus 7 series, the performance has not changed much, but it is already at a particularly high level anyway.

Description: AnTuTu and Geekbench may be the most popular tools for measuring the performance of their smartphones. These two applications not only check the performance of the processor (CPU), but also other components, such as the graphics unit or main memory. The higher the score, the better the result. Since the end of September 2019, we have been using Geekbench 5 instead of Geekbench 4 for testing.

The battery capacity of the 7T has increased by 100 mAh, and now totals 3,800 mAh. Handy also supports Warp Charge 30T, so the output power of the provided charger is 30 watts-the maximum output power of OnePlus 7 is 20 watts. Thanks to the optimization of the battery itself, Warp Charge 30T is also 18% faster than Warp Charge 30 of 7 Pro. After half an hour, the power of the 7T battery has exceeded 70%. Unfortunately, wireless charging is still not supported.

In the PCMark battery test, the smartphone can last a total of 11 hours and 56 minutes at about 25% screen brightness and 90 Hz, and then 20% of the remaining power. This is about an hour longer than the OnePlus 7 Pro or Galaxy S10, but the lifespan of some other competitors is also an hour or two longer. Of course, if you "tune" the display to 60 Hz, you can achieve longer battery life, but you will eventually give up the unique selling point of the device.

Voice quality and speakers

In the test, the mobile phone performed well during the call. The dialogue between the two parties knows each other very clearly, and the speaker will not be distorted even at high volume. The noise reduction effect is also satisfactory, but the wind sound is easy to hear, and sometimes the sound of passing cars can seep into the conversation. In addition, OnePlus 7T always maintains LTE signals even in our office building, and most other competitors retreat to the edge to receive at the latest in the stairwell. Of course, VoLTE, WLAN calling and dual SIM cards are supported.

The stereo speakers are available again and the sound is convincing. They become relatively large without distortion. It is certainly superior to the mono speaker competitors, but it cannot reach the volume of the stereo pair in the iPhone 11 Pro Max. Today, like so many mobile phones, unfortunately there is no headphone jack. Instead, you can use Bluetooth 5.0 with codecs that support aptX HD, AAC, and LDAC. OnePlus provides Bullets Wireless 2 that can be matched, but other Bluetooth headsets can of course also be used.

OnePlus 7T is one of the first smartphones delivered directly with Android 10. OnePlus continues to rely on its own user interface OxygenOS. It responds quickly and smoothly on the phone, at first glance it seems pure. However, in the settings, it provides many adjustment options and some practical additional features that are not available in "standard Android". The manufacturer guarantees two Android version updates and three years of firmware updates. The gesture control is now the same as the new version of Google and the corresponding versions of Xiaomi and Huawei.

Compared to other built-in fingerprint sensors in other phones, the fingerprint sensor built into the display is still the fastest, but 2D face unlocking is also flexible-albeit with lower security. A new vibration motor is installed in the smartphone, similar to the 7 Pro. This is especially noticeable when typing or with an incoming notification.
