As far as games from the Onimusha series are concerned, things have been extremely quiet in recent years, apart from the 2019 remaster. But at least with regard to the Netflix series something is slowly happening.
Anyone remember Onimusha? In the games, which were particularly popular between 2001 and 2006, you competed as a Japanese swordsman against undead generals and their armies. Since then, the series has been pretty quiet, apart from a remaster of Onimusha: Warlords, which was released in 2019.
But now, in cooperation with Capcom, a Netflix series is in the works that takes up the topic again. There is no release date yet, but Netflix has now given some first insights. According to this, the anime series will be developed by Takashi Miike and Shinya Sugai (Dragon’s Dogmna). Toshiro Mifune serves as the visual role model for the main character Musashi Miyamoto – anyone who is interested in Japanese samurai films should know the actor.
The description reads: “The beginning of the Edo period, Musashi is no longer a young man. He sets out with the legendary Oni Gauntlet to defeat the Genma. 3D CGI characters and hand-drawn backgrounds make for a phenomenal Optics. Onimusha is brought to life with modern animation technology.”
Unfortunately, there is no trailer yet, but at least some first pictures. Seems like Netflix has really whetted the appetite for anime following the success of The Arcane and now Cyberpunk: Edgerunners.
