Meryl Streep will receive the Golden Palm of Honor in Cannes in 2024 for her life’s work. We’re there live as she talks about her career in a “rendez-vous”.
Meryl Streep will be presented with the Golden Palm of Honor during the opening ceremony of the 2024 Cannes Film Festival. Last year, Michael Douglas received this honorary award for life’s work. Streep was visibly moved and today there was a talk with the acting legend, which we attended live.
Streep gained fame in the 1970s for films such as “The Ones Who Go Through Hell” (1978; director: Michael Cimino) and “Manhattan” (1979; director: Woody Allen). Today her most famous films include “The Devil Wears Prada” and “Mamma Mia”.
Meet Meryl Streep
Meryl Streep has received a total of 3 Oscars for her acting performances. The first was as “Best Supporting Actress” for “Kramer vs. Kramer” in 1979, and in 1983 she finally received her second Oscar for “Sophie’s Decision”, this time as “Best Actress”. She also received an Oscar for “Best Actress” in 2012 for “The Iron Lady”. In total, Streep was nominated for an Oscar 21 times.
The talk with French journalist Didier Allouch was about many of Meryl Streep’s films, from her 1970s films to new films. Meryl was articulate, humorous, but also, by her own admission, hungover. The evening before, after the opening ceremony, she celebrated until 3 a.m.
She also talked about her last time in Cannes, which was 35 years ago. She still remembers how the security precautions at the festival were much less enforced back then and how, even though she had no bodyguards at all in Hollywood, she suddenly found herself with a dozen bodyguards on the Cote d’Azur.
While Meryl shares many little anecdotes from her career, one in particular sticks in our minds about her first Oscar for her performance in “Kramer vs. Kramer.” She was young and excited and almost forgot her Oscar in the bathroom of the venue during the ceremony.
Her dress was very loose and when she went to the bathroom she had to put down her Oscar. She still remembers leaving the bathroom without the Oscar. Luckily, the next person found the trophy and gave it back to her.
In 2024, three Palms of Honor will be awarded in Cannes. While Meryl Streep received her Palme d’Or during the opening ceremony, “Star Wars” creator George Lucas will receive an Honorary Golden Palm at the closing ceremony. Studio Ghibli (“The Boy and the Heron”) will also receive a Palme of Honor in a separate ceremony on May 20, 2024.
We will be live on site for the full 12 days of the festival and report on the best films that will be shown. On our social media channels you can follow our journey. Click here for our overview of this year’s Cannes highlights.
