Blizzard Entertainment wants to finally fulfill the community’s wish and is bringing the popular 6v6 mode back to Overwatch 2 this year.
Overwatch 2 has been known to rely on 5v5 games for a long time, after Blizzard Entertainment shelved the previous 6v6 mode. The community, on the whole, has been wanting a return to classic gameplay for a long time – and now the development team is finally getting down to business in this regard.
Blizzard Entertainment wants to test the comeback of the 6v6 mode with the approaching Season 14 in Overwatch 2 and see how things behave in the overall context. In a first test run in the new season there will be no 2-2-2 role queue, instead they will rely on “Min 1, Max 3”. This means that a team of six players can have at least one character per role and no more than three heroes per role.
After this first 6v6 test run, there will be another test with the classic 2-2-2 model (two damage, support and tank heroes) around the middle of the new season. The return to the previous game mode will initially be carried out independently in unranked mode, but in seasonal events or in Quick Play it will initially remain at the current 5v5.
As a result of the tests, balance changes will be implemented and 6v6 adjusted. It remains to be seen whether we will permanently switch back to 6v6 or stick with the current 5v5. The studio cannot currently say conclusively whether 5v5 and 6v6 might not be allowed to coexist.
Season 14 will start in Overwatch 2 in December 2024.
