The sequel Overwatch 2 officially launched yesterday, but that launch was anything but smooth for Blizzard Entertainment.
Blizzard’s online action game sequel Overwatch 2 was released on Tuesday after years of development – at least the PvP component. However, the servers went straight to their knees, and that wasn’t just due to the onslaught of players. The bottom line was that the title was initially unplayable for long stretches.
Blizzard support was quick to respond and confirmed that they were aware of the issues and were working on a fix; How long this should take was not initially stated.
Blizzard Entertainment President Mike Ybarra later said: “The teams are hard at work on the Overwatch 2 server issues. We’re honored by the enthusiasm of the players and will continue to address the issues focus and keep players having fun. Thanks for your patience.”
In a later tweet, however, Ybarra underlined that it was by no means just the onslaught of players that was causing problems for the servers. Accordingly, Blizzard is faced with a “massive DDoS attack on the servers”. One is busy with load management, but unfortunately that is the reason for many drops and incorrect connections.
Away from the long queues, many players have also experienced that once they reach queue position 0, they can’t go any further. Instead, they got a message about a login error and asked to try again later. Other players got the message “Unexpected Server Error”.
