Changing the way the competitive game works Overwatch 2 Already some players plan to stop playing before the end of the season.
With the release of Overwatch 2, there have clearly been a number of changes in the game. For example, the loot box is gone, the battle pass is inside. Competitiveness has changed as well, but one of the changes is apparently not noticeable to some players. Season 2 started recently, and players found that they weren’t getting the level of rewards they expected in ranked matches, as the rewards were based on where the player was now at the end of the season (thanks, PC Gaming N).
Previously, at the end of a season, Overwatch players would be rewarded based on the highest rank they achieved, regardless of their end-of-season rank. As a result, some players decided to stop playing ranked games before the end of the season, as discussed in the gameplay section. Many players point out that they’re just trying to get to a certain level and leave it there. Others even pointed out that this is what they do now, and they know this is how it works.
The official Overwatch Twitter account clarified the changes in a statement last week, writing “At the end of each season, your final ranking will be based on all games played since the last ranking update. Competition rewards are based on your final rank.”
The statement also states that players will notice a drop in rank for all characters at the start of the season, and that over the course of a season, they should be able to return to a rank that reflects their true skill level.
“We know we need to do a better job of making these systems more understandable, and will address these and other parts of the system in the future.”
It’s not particularly clear why this change was made. Blizzard may be trying to encourage players to keep their ranks, but if it just stays the same, there’s no reason to keep playing. This sort of thing might work if the player is penalized for being inactive, but it also doesn’t make the player feel good, so overall it’s a poor decision. At least it’s easier to polish the newest hero than Season 1.
