TV series for Blizzard’s major gaming brands were apparently once planned for Netflix, but a legal dispute between the two companies got in the way.
Many big gaming brands have now made the jump to TV or the big screen, but at Blizzard Entertainment things have remained largely quiet despite the big brands. Sure, there was a big Warcraft film in 2016, but otherwise there is no trace of further adaptations. Blizzard has several well-known series that have an excellently developed and mature story.
The well-informed Jason Schreier from Bloomberg now reports that things could have turned out completely differently. Corresponding adaptations of the other major franchises Overwatch, Diablo and StarCraft were actually in the works at one point. Blizzard Entertainment cooperated with Netflix, but these implementations never saw the light of day.
The topic had now been taken up in a Reddit AMA about Schreier’s new book “Play Nice: The Rise, Fall, and Future of Blizzard Entertainment”, with the insider replying: “The book reveals that they have StarCraft, Overwatch and Diablo series had been working with Netflix. But uh…”
The quote doesn’t end there because Schreier left a link to a story by Variety consequences. Subject of the report: A lawsuit brought by Activision Blizzard against Netflix because the streaming giant is said to have illegally attempted to poach high-ranking staff. These disputes apparently led to the series being canceled.
Will there still be such series for the big Blizzard brands? That remains to be seen! After all, according to another Schreier report, a new StarCraft shooter is said to be in the works.
