Overwatch sets may have been boxed, but 2022 should be a good year for LEGO and gaming

Lego Overwatch Haven’t had the best time yet. I’ve always found these two brands a bit odd – but despite some cool sets, it’s never quite hit the nail on the head. After two “waves” Overwatch building kit, Lego With the tepid response, it appears that much of the third wave of the Overwatch franchise has been wiped out. Several sets have survived, including one set for release next month — but has now been shelved due to the ongoing disaster of Activision Blizzard’s public-facing image and internal operations. The disgraced executive who refused to resign may well have hammered the final nail in the LEGO Overwatch theme.

But if you love video games and are interested in Lego, all is not lost. In fact, 2022 could be the best year ever for Lego and video games. Yes, we have a new LEGO Star Wars game coming up – but I’m talking about physical toys.

I realize that the overlap of people who follow video game news and Lego news religiously may not be that great, so let me catch you on last year’s development: a dedicated “Lego game” series may appear in Dadi. Instead of a series of LEGOs based on a specific franchise like Overwatch and Super Mario, they will be a series of disjointed sets from various franchises, all released under a common banner – It’s exciting.

The news leaked through a Polish retailer last summer. In video games, we tend to be very cautious about retailer listings, but LEGO is not as secretive as video game companies, and new sets and product lines are often leaked through retailer listings. As LEGO website Brick Fanatics reported at the time, leaks indicated that the LEGO Play set would initially include 11 sets. This is quite important. However, at least two of them are Overwatch Hangovers from the canceled LEGO Overwatch Series 3, and will most likely never be released now. This gives us nine sets to play.

Late last year, at least one appeared to leak on a separate listing: LEGO Horizon: Zero Dawn Turtleneck.

The leak is particularly detailed, providing more information. The set number 76989, priced at 80 dollars, is for adults and belongs to the LEGO 18+ series. This suggests it will be a large set within the LEGO adult black box brand, more of a detailed statue than a toy. That would put it in the same category as recent Mario 64 question mark blocks and LEGO NES sets.

The Lego set and the leak of the Horizon Tallneck set are exciting for the image it portrays. LEGO has worked closely with Nintendo on LEGO Mario — but here, they’re working with Sony, in a place unlike Star Wars, Marvel, or Mario (all of which are now LEGO staples). Horizon suits for adults are also fun. That means we could see some left-field game franchises in the LEGO game franchise. We should see broad publisher representation. If successful, we could see something grow into a full-fledged product line, as Lego Minecraft did years ago.

Of course, fans have made it clear over the years that there is a lot of interest in gaming-themed Lego sets. Franchises like Zelda, Animal Crossing, Among Us and Metroid have garnered hundreds of thousands of votes through interest measurement service Lego Ideas. Ideas also brought a number of game sets, including the aforementioned Lego Minecraft and the newly released Lego Sonic the Hedgehog – a beautiful fan-designed set that has articulations on both sides so it can be moved Clip together to form longer, more detailed level layouts. Hopefully this shows the LEGO Group intends to release more Sonic sets.

The LEGO Group made the right decision to delay the Overwatch 2 series. Knowing the history of LEGO, these sets are simply not possible now. But nonetheless, this is an exciting time for a gamer who is also a Lego fan. Only one question remains: Which games would you like to see get LEGO sets? Make your voice heard in the comments below.
