After Nintendo and The Pokémon Company filed a trademark infringement lawsuit against PocketPair, the developer of the survival game has now commented on the issue.
After months of uncertainty, Nintendo and The Pokémon Company finally filed a lawsuit against the Palworld developers at PocketPair in Japan yesterday, September 18. The lawsuit alleges infringement of their own trademark rights by the survival game, which was launched in January with great hype and whose Pals look confusingly similar to numerous Pokémon.
Shortly after the lawsuit was filed, the Palworld creators also issued a statement. The official Twitter or X account states:
“Yesterday, a patent infringement lawsuit was filed against our company. We have become aware of this litigation and will begin taking the appropriate legal steps and investigations into the allegations of patent infringement. At this time, we do not know which specific patents are alleged to have been infringed, as claimed in the lawsuit, and we have not been provided with such details.”
As a result, the company is disappointed with the lawsuit and sees itself as a victim: “PocketPair is a small indie game company based in Tokyo. Our goal as a company has always been to create fun games. We will continue to pursue this goal in the future because we know that our games bring joy to millions of players around the world. Palworld was a surprise success this year, both for the players and for us. We were blown away by the great feedback on the game and have worked hard to make it even better for our fans. We will continue to improve Palworld and strive to create a game that our fans can be proud of.”
“It is truly unfortunate that we are now forced to spend significant time on matters unrelated to game development due to this litigation. However, we will do our utmost for our fans and ensure that indie game developers are not hindered or discouraged from pursuing their creative ideas. We apologize to our fans and supporters for any concern or discomfort caused by this news. And as always, we thank you for your continued support of Palworld and PocketPair.”
