The survival game Palworld has achieved incredible success in a very short time, leaving heavyweights like Cyberpunk 2077, Counter-Strike 2 and Elden Ring on Steam behind.
After just two weeks, Palworld had already reached 19 million players and also broke the record for the largest third-party launch on Xbox/PC Game Pass. However, this rapid success also has its downsides.
Palworld is expensive fun for the developers
The Steam hit Palworld is a real adventure not only in terms of play, but also financially – at least for the makers. As has now become known, the game’s server costs are putting a lot of strain on the coffers of the developer company Pocketpair. CEO Takuro Mizobe even jokes that the monthly costs of server maintenance could potentially bankrupt the company.
Mizobe posted an image on Twitter showing Palworld’s rapidly increasing server maintenance costs. Accordingly, the costs for the current month have increased by a whopping 359 percent. Given these numbers, the CEO joked that the company could go bankrupt because of server costs:

Chujo Hiroto, senior network engineer at Palworld, added in a response that the team provided the servers without regard to cost to ensure that all players can fully enjoy the game. The current costs? Almost $478,000 – per month!
We were ordered not to interrupt operations at any cost, we set up the servers without regard to profitability. We will continue to do everything in our power to ensure our players can enjoy the game to the fullest!
Extrapolated, that’s almost $6 million per year – but the massive investments in the server infrastructure seem to have been worth it so far. Despite some teething problems caused by the unexpectedly massive rush for the game, Palworld’s servers have remained largely stable over the past few days.
