An oasis makes its way among so many sequels and known formulas, although its name is a little difficult to retain: Kunitsu-Gami: Path of the Goddess. A single-player fantasy delightfully inspired by the folklore and aesthetics of exotic feudal Japan. Behind him, nothing less than a Capcom on a roll. And although it does not have a date, we already told you that Game Pass players will receive it at launch this year.
what is it about Kunitsu-Gami: Path of the Goddess? Presented last year, its creators define its formula as a sword dance with strategic action. Said like this, it seems that we will have to do many things at the same time, but as you can see, there are good things inherited from games as different as the first Pikmin and Onimusha. Two very different types of experiences that, mixed with a certain eye, don’t look bad at all.
The premise is simple: the villages of a sacred mountain have begun to suffer the punishment of taken away, evil creatures with twisted shapes from the spirit realm. The way to prevent this evil from spreading is through a process of purification during the day and intense purging at night. And in both, a priestess, a skilled swordsman and those brave men who join our cause take part.
Kunitsu-Gami: Path of the Goddess once again showcases what can be done with the RE Engine (Capcom’s engine for Resident Evil, Monster Hunter or Street Fighter 6) offering a colorful fable in which we will traverse the mountains freeing the villagers by purifying them and giving them specific roles to the growing threat. Because only the priestess can stop the arreptants, but our task, as can be deduced from her name, will be to open the way for them with our sword.
The interesting thing here is that, beyond giving roles to those we rescue and organizing the villages rescued thanks to the blessing of the priestess, we will use their skills in the combats with hack’n slash elements: We will lead squads and assign objectives during battles while we distribute slashes at our discretion. Giving the priestess that narrow margin to complete her ritual and disperse the threats.
The new surprise from Osaka? Capcom is on a roll with its big ongoing licenses, but it is not afraid to experiment and expand its franchise portfolio. And we are not going to deny it Kunitsu-Gami: Path of the Goddess wonderful house with that legacy of very special games from the house of the Blue Bomber such as Okami, Sengoku Basara or his own Onimusha.
Initially presented at the 2023 Xbox Games Showcase and it will not take long for us to have new news about it, since Kunitsu-Gami: Path of the Goddess will be one of the key titles of the event Capcom Highlights. For now, we already know that it is confirmed for Xbox Series X/S, PS5 and PC and will debut on Game Pass.
