Given that Payday 3 has been in development since 2017, we haven’t heard much about the game. Now there is another sign of life that also gives hope.
Payday 3 has been bobbing for years. Here and there there is a sign of life, but nothing more. But now there are very specific reasons to hope that we will see the game someday. Developer Starbreeze has signed a publishing deal with Koch Media.
According to Starbreeze CEO Tobias Sjögren, the deal, which will include financing of a whopping 60 million US dollars, will now secure the further development of the game and should also cover publishing and marketing costs, as well as content and marketing for the first 18 months after launch. This now guarantees a strong foundation for the successful release of the game.
The release period is now set to 2023, for PC and console versions. It is also certain that Starbreeze will aim at a games-as-a-service model – that is, additional functions and content should be made available well after the release.
The deal means not only the possible release of Payday 3, but also the rescue of Starbreeze. Already in 2019 there were reports of an impending bankruptcy of the developer studio, which could apparently be averted by residual income from Payday 2. The games in the Payday series were able to sell 28 million times worldwide.
