Sonic the Hedgehog 3 has clearly proven itself to be a hit with fans, as it has already surpassed the second film at the box office.

We already knew the Sonic Cinematic Universe was here to stay, but it's becoming clearer. First, the fourth film in the series was confirmed to be filmed in 2027 even before the third film was released, and earlier this month, the combined box office of these three films reached $1 billion. On top of that, Sonic the Hedgehog 3 became the second-highest-grossing video game movie in the United States, behind only Super Mario Bros. Movie (admittedly, by a long shot). Now, according to Variety , the third installment in the franchise has set another record, this time in its own franchise.

Last weekend, Sonic 3's global box office total reached $420 million, making it the highest-grossing of the three films released to date. The title previously belonged to the second installment, which grossed $405 million, still an impressive and healthy number. I'm sure Paramount would be happy to see an increase like that, even if it's just marginal (if $20 million can be marginal), because that's probably the point where things start to drop off (if that's the case).

Considering Shadow is a fan-favorite character, I have no doubt that Shadow's presence will help boost sales for this movie, but the question now is whether the fourth movie will do the same. The post-credits scene does introduce another fan-favorite scene that I'm personally excited about, so we'll have to wait and see if Blue Pig can keep up his momentum.
