We have already reported on the popular Game Boy clone in the past. The Analogue Pocket is able to natively play old Game Boy games (including Game Boy Color and Game Boy Advance) in a more modern guise, without any emulation and with old retro charm.
Tomorrow at 17:00 Europe time it will be that time again: The Analogue Pocket is available. The manufacturer offers a strictly limited Special Edition in four colors and made of aluminum:
- Silber
- Grau
- Schwarz
- Indigo
Until now, speed and a bit of luck were required, because the Analogue Pocket always sold out quickly.
Now there’s more bad news: the special edition of the handheld could really break your wallet.
The manufacturer is asking a proud 500 US dollars for the limited versionThe previous versions were offered for around 220 US dollars, but were still made of plastic. Because they have to be imported, there are high shipping costs in Europey, as well as customs and VAT. So expect significantly higher costs when ordering.
What can the Analogue Pocket do?
Thanks to a so-called “FPGA” chip, the Analogue Pocket can play old Game Boy, Game Boy Color and Game Boy Advance games natively (without software emulation) via a corresponding slot on the back. Plug the corresponding game into the back, switch it on and off you go.
Optionally available adapters extend compatibility to other retro handhelds such as Sega Game Gear, Neo Geo Pocket, Neo Geo Pocket+ and Atari Lynx.
Technically, the manufacturer is of course bringing the device up to date so that you can enjoy the old games on a sharp display.
These are the specifications of the Analogue Pocket:
- Display size: 3.5 inch
- Display type: LCD with variable refresh rate
- Display resolution: 1600 x 1440
- Pixel density: 615 ppi
- Battery capacity: 4300 mAh for 6 to 10 hours of playtime
- Audio: Stereo speakers and 3.5mm headphone jack
- Memory expansion: MicroSD
- connections: USB-C and Original GameBoy Link
If you want to enjoy your old Game Boy games on your TV, you can optionally purchase a docking station, although this costs an additional $100.
Two handhelds can even be connected to each other using a paid link cable.
It is expected that the manufacturer will bring further limited versions of the handheld onto the market. The regular models are also available in black and white from time to time. You can get an email from the official website as soon as they are available again.
What do you think of the Analogue Pocket? Is it a nice gadget for trips back to the good old days or is the manufacturer overshooting the mark with such a high price? Do you already have such a gadget and can tell us about your experiences so far? Feel free to write them in the comments below!
