The Persona 5 Phenomenon
Persona 5 is a Japanese role-playing game (or J-RPG for Japanese Role Playing Game) developed by P Studio and published by Atlus. The first version was released on September 15, 2016 in Japan and almost 7 months later in the West. All-time best-seller for the publisher on Japanese soil, then best launch for a Persona saga game in the rest of the world, P5 finally reached 3.2 million copies sold worldwide in December 2019. At some point in 2019, Persona 5 Royal will be added to PlayStation 4, making the fifth episode possible 5 million sales including 1.8 million from the Royal Edition.
And that’s not all. In addition to adapting the adventures of the Joker into animated series and manga, Persona 5 is also included as a video game the release of two spin-offs, namely Persona 5: Dancing in Starlight, a rhythm game, and in particular Persona 5: Strikers. Released on February 10th, 2020 in Japan, this action RPG inspired by the musô genre and developed by OMEGA Force sells 1.5 million copies and has a “little” anomaly. This official sequel to Persona 5, unlike the game that is the origin of the phenomenon, is available on Nintendo Switch. That injustice will be righted with the release of Persona 5 Royale on Nintendo’s hybrid console, as well as on PC (Windows), PlayStation 5, Xbox One and Xbox Series X/S.
A Switch version at altitude?
Don’t worry about the next-gen (PS5 and Xbox Series X/S) and PC (Windows) versions of Persona 5 Royal. The power built into these platforms is more than enough to proudly wear the colors of Joker and his gang. As for the Nintendo Switch, it’s a whole different story. Big N’s hybrid console lags behind the 9th generation machinesand that was felt with a major project like Persona 5 Royal.
Only one dungeon was offered on the demo, which was presented during Tokyo Game Show 2022 and allowed visitors to browse for 15 minutes with a stopwatch in hand. Nevertheless, the gameplay is unexpectedly smooth both during exploration phases and during combat. The interfaces, clean and tidy in all other versions, don’t suffer from the comparison in any way. Persona 5 has still made sacrifices, and not leastarrive in full possession (or almost) of his means on the Nintendo console.
Cutscenes, jewels of the 2D animation series, are available in 720p. With the console “docked” it feels a little without really being problematic, and The same goes for the rest of the graphics, which remain very correct on Switch without ever competing with the other versions… especially those on PlayStation 5, Xbox Series or even Steam Deck (PC). Gaming on Nintendo’s console is a credible alternative in 2022.
Persona 5 Royal will be released on October 21, 2022 on PC (Windows), Nintendo Switch, PlayStation 5, Xbox One and Xbox Series X/S.
