Over the years, the end of Game of Thrones will continue to be a topic of debate among fans, as it was one of the most controversial endings in television history. The conclusion of this ambitious series generated divided opinions, not only among fans, but also among the cast. While some actors expressed their disagreement with the ending, others openly defended it.
One of the strongest advocates has been Peter Dinklagewho played the charismatic Tyrion Lannister in the HBO production, and who in a recent interview with the magazine Rolling Stone
“I like the ending! You don’t have to agree with me. What if I said, ‘Yeah, I agree. I hated the ending. The whole last season was awful. ‘ I mean, that would be way worse than if I said I loved it, which is what I did. I can’t speak for anybody else’s opinion, and that’s what makes what we do fun, because everybody has a difference of opinion and everybody can write about it and chat about it and drink about it and argue about it. It’s great. I think it means you’re doing something right. It’s like an old Irish way of looking at the world. Something’s wrong if everything’s right.”
Dinklage acknowledges that there are differences of opinion and believes the controversy has kept the conversation about the series alive. According to himmuch of the public’s anger came not so much from the characters’ ending, but from the fact that the series put an end to the tradition of gathering every Sunday to watch a new episode.
On the other hand, much of the criticism of the series finale focused on the speed with which important plots were wrapped up. The eighth season, with its accelerated pace, attempted to conclude several narrative arcs that could have led to more seasons. However, both the showrunners and the cast opted for a more condensed conclusion, which generated widespread anger among much of the adaptation’s fans.
