Countless companies in the games industry have laid off numerous employees in 2023 – and at the end of the year one publisher is completely hit: Versus Evil is closing its doors.
There is news that was no longer needed at the end of the year! After a number of companies in the video game industry have massively cut staff, laid off employees and closed departments in recent months, one publisher is now closing its doors completely at the end of the year. In this case, what is meant is Versus Evil, which has made a name for itself primarily by publishing well-known indie titles.
In the past, Versus Evil published, among other things, The Banner Saga by Stoic and Pillars of Eternity from Obsidian Entertainment as a publisher – but this journey will now come to an end completely at the end of 2023. The entire workforce was laid off just before Christmas after Atari had previously invested $2 million in tinyBuild, the parent company of Versus Evil.
A statement on our breathtaking community. From the bottom of our hearts: THANK YOU for everything!”
The former Head of Production at Versus Evil, Lance James, emphasized in a short statement that this decision was not made by Versus Evil itself. The closure affected 13 employees, according to a post by Francis Fincke, the former Director of Product Strategy, on LinkedIn.
In advance, the parent company tinyBuild had announced lower sales than expected and therefore initiated cost-saving measures. The result was layoffs in the company back then, followed by the current closure of Versus Evil, which was described as an “underperformer” in a PDF document dated December 5th.
