Sony is reportedly working on a device that will let you play your PS5 games without a console. Perhaps the return of a discontinued service?
Spotted by Gamerant, Sony would have updated one of its patents, suggesting it was working on a brand new system capable of playing PS5 games on any medium, like Microsoft with its famous Xbox Everywhere policy.
PS5 everywhere
While Microsoft has been trying to copy the competition lately, this time it’s Sony trying to gain a foothold in its competitor’s market. According to the latest patent, the manufacturer is preparing a big surprise for its players by developing an “intercom for streaming games (cloud)”. On paper, this system should allow gamers to launch their games from compatible connected displays, such as certain TVs. A functionality identical to that we find on Xbox with the Xbox Cloud Gaming application available on Samsung TVs.
The return of PlayStation Now?
The goal here would therefore be to expand the player base by offering a catalog of streaming games directly to TVs and other compatible screens without the need for PS5. What is surprising, however, is that Sony mentions PlayStation Now again, suggesting that the patent is not new but actually renewed. The PlayStaiton Now was indeed removed following the PS Plus subscriptions overhaul and it would be amazing to see it back to how it was before.
As usual, a patent filing or an extension doesn’t necessarily mean the feature will arrive any time soon, nor does it even guarantee it will see the light of day. It nevertheless allows one to get an idea of what’s going on at the manufacturer and testifies to its desire to expand its offering beyond its simple proprietary ecosystem, as Microsoft is doing with its Xbox brand. The two giants have not yet ended the fight.
