The Xbox Series X has already made the backward compatibility of the console a big issue, and Sony will not be fooled in this regard in the future either. You don't seem to be quite as far as Microsoft yet, but the line-up of compatible PS4 titles with the PS5 should be quite good at launch.

During today's stream on the launch of PlayStation 5, system architect Mark Cerny also confirmed, among other things, that the next-gen console will at least support the top 100 PS4 games for release, which means that they will also be compatible with the PS5 – at least in the vast majority.
How can the Top 100 be defined in this context? What is meant is the ranking of the PS4 titles according to the season. Almost all of the 100 most played PS4 titles will work on the PS5.
Why only "almost everyone"? This is due to the performance of the console, says Cerny. The performance and PS4 and PS5 are so far apart that some old titles could simply have a problem with the available computing power on the PS5. Because the PS5 is too fast, individual titles cannot work without a corresponding optimization of the developers. So they have to make a few tweaks before their PS4 games are actually compatible with the PS5.
"Some game code simply cannot handle it. Test runs have to be carried out from title to title," explains Cerny. A large part of the most played PS4 titles already seems to work on the PS5, so that you can at least assume downward compatibility for the most important games of the current generation. Others will surely follow in the future.
