The renowned business magazine Bloomberg has released a new report saying Sony is having more serious pricing issues for the upcoming PlayStation 5. The reason for this is that various components that are to be used in the PS5 are currently scarce – and that should lead to higher production costs than initially expected.
Loud boom mountain Sony will finalize the targeted retail price for such a launch in February, as a rule, but this time it will be very difficult to find the price. Above all, the use of NAND Flash Memory and DRAM components play a role. The use of NVME SSD storage in each PS5 is driving Sony into competition with smartphone manufacturers, most of whom also use these storage components for their cell phones.
This new competition for Sony in the supplier segment is also beginning to order NAND components for the next smartphone generation, which is due to be released later in 2020. However, the resources are limited and this ultimately leads to the fact that, due to demand, prices are currently rising unexpectedly significantly.
The components for cooling the PS5 are also currently expected to increase costs further. These are said to be loud Bloomberg With "a few dollars" per console, in the past it actually cost the manufacturer less than a dollar.
While the mass production of a new console normally starts correctly in spring before it really starts in autumn, Sony should rather wait and watch the situation at the moment. After all, according to some sources, the company doesn't necessarily want to make a loss by selling every PS5. At the same time, given the competition for the Xbox Series X, the PS5 must also maintain a certain price segment in order to remain competitive – and Microsoft's pricing should therefore play a decisive role in the starting price of the PS5.
For comparison: When the PS4 was launched at a price of $ 400, Sony was said to have made just $ 19 in profit per console sold. At the moment, even with regard to the PS5, even that is probably difficult given the price situation. For this reason, too, no decision has yet been made as to which quantities of PS5 will be launched at the market launch.
