In the past few days, a number of technical details about the upcoming PlayStation 5 Pro have been leaked and the keyword PSSR has also been mentioned. The new technology should also make 120 fps possible at 4K resolution in the future.
Recently, all sorts of technical details about the PlayStation 5 Pro, which is expected to be released in autumn 2024, became public and the new technology PlayStation Spectral Super Resolution, or PSSR for short, was also mentioned. But what is behind it? Renowned insider Tom Henderson is now shedding some more light on this matter.
Thanks to PSSR, which will be used for the first time on the PS5 Pro, 120 fps at 4K resolutions and a still whopping 60 fps at 8K resolutions should be possible in the future. PSSR is a technology that helps to upscale the graphics to higher resolutions. PSSR can already be used in the current SKD version 9.00, but the goals set out above are not yet fully achieved with the PS5 Pro.
Due to the technology used, PSSR will currently focus on resolutions of 3840×2160 in the PlayStation 5 Pro; This emerges from documents that were leaked to Insider Gaming. The more powerful console should therefore make 4K at 60 fps possible, but may even be able to achieve 8K at 30 fps. It is currently unclear whether these internally set milestones can actually be achieved.
According to the leaked documents, Sony’s ambitions around PlayStation Spectral Super Resolution go beyond these goals with the PS5 Pro; The technology is already looking towards PlayStation 6, so to speak. Then the aforementioned 120 fps at 4K resolutions and 60 fps at 8K resolutions should ultimately be possible via PSSR.
According to Henderson, there are two case studies of unnamed first-party games for the use of PSSR. On a standard PS5, a title can be played at 60 fps at 1080p in Performance mode and at 30 fps at 1800p in Fidelity mode. Thanks to PSSR, the PS5 Pro should then combine both modes to some extent and enable at least 60 fps at 1440p.
A second case studio brings ray tracing into focus. The standard PS5 achieves 60 fps in the game without ray tracing, on the PS5 Pro 60 fps with ray tracing is possible thanks to PSSR.
