Sony is currently testing cloud streaming of PS5 games PlayStation Plus Premium Edition member.
This includes PS5 games from the PlayStation Plus games catalog and game trials, as well as supporting digital PS5 games owned by players.
When the feature launches, cloud game streaming of supported games will be available directly on the PS5 console. This means that as a premium member, it’s easier to start playing without having to download the game to your console first.
The goal, Sony says, is to add cloud streaming as an additional Plus Premium benefit, increasing the value of that tier.
“We believe it’s important that premium members be able to enjoy as many games as possible through cloud streaming,” said Nick Maguire, vice president of global services, sales and business operations at PlayStation.
“As more and more games launch on the PS5 console, we look forward to adding cloud streaming capabilities for PS5 games, in addition to PS3, PS4 and classic games already available for premium members to stream. We are in the early stages , and we can’t wait to share more details, including a release timeframe, when we’re ready.
The new PlayStation Plus has been well received by PlayStation users, and adding more streaming opportunities in the future will make the Premium tier likely to retain users or grow in popularity. With three tiers, Sony found that the most expensive premium tier has the largest share of the user base than the mid-tier Extra. No wonder the company wanted to add extra incentives, since it would allow users to switch tiers or keep premium members where they are currently.
According to Maguire, when talking to GI.biz, Sony was sure that Extra would be “where most people go first,” but it was a surprise for the company to find that Premium was more popular and larger.
The new PS Plus launched a year ago and offers three products: PlayStation Plus Premium, PlayStation Plus Extra and PlayStation Plus Essential, each with its own set of benefits.
