With the Project Q, Sony recently released a handheld, but it doesn’t see itself as a real successor to the PS Vita, but rather just streams games from the PlayStation 5. If you believe a new report, then Sony will actually deliver a real gaming handheld.
There was quite a bit of excitement when the first rumors about Project Q from Sony arose. Many fans who like to play games on the go were already looking forward to a successor to the earlier handhelds PlayStation Portable and PlayStation Vita, but in the end Project Q aka PlayStation Portal was nothing other than a remote streaming handheld to the PlayStation 5, which was not works independently of the home console.
So all the excitement is in vain? Maybe not entirely, because Sony may continue to work behind closed doors on a real new gaming handheld that could then also compete with the Switch.
At least the well-known hardware leakers are now reporting that Sony is likely to breathe new life into the traditional gaming handheld market Moore’s Law Is Dead (MLID). Accordingly, the company is working on a handheld console that will not only function as a streaming device for the PS5. Rather, the new product should be able to support and play games natively.
Sea MLID The plans for such new hardware include the use of a special AMD APU, which is “currently in the high-level design phase”. However, this is still “at least two years away” and is currently “not yet technically approved for launch”.
Sony’s implementation doesn’t seem to be a done deal yet, but we can apparently have legitimate hopes for a big comeback in the area of handheld gaming. If the speculation is to be believed, then the new platform will offer native backwards compatibility with PS4 games and receive a kind of “Pro-like patch” for PS5 titles; The hardware insiders rely on developer circles.
Despite everything, the new device is currently still in an early development phase, so the plans and the specific design of such hardware can still change. It would even be conceivable that Sony would ultimately scrap the device entirely. But one point remains MLID Clear: It can be confirmed that work is currently being done on the handheld and AMD has secured the contract for the APU. The “exact specifications” are currently still pure speculation.
