Earlier this year, Sony announced that 8% of its workforce would be laid off in the near future. Sony’s London-based development studio, founded in 2002, is now also part of this measure.
At Sony, the Londoners were primarily responsible for games with unusual peripherals. For example, they developed some games for PlayStation’s Eye Toy camera, Wonderbook and the VR titles VR Worlds and Blood & Truth. The best known, however, are probably the Getaway series and of course the Singstar franchise.
The last time we heard from the studio, it was said to be working on an online co-op game set in a fantasy take on London. Unfortunately, it is not known what will happen to the project.
“For over twenty years, London Studio has been home to some exceptionally talented and wonderful people in the games industry,” the studio said in a farewell message.
“As we close the doors and embark on new adventures, we would like to extend our heartfelt thanks to all of our past and present staff, players and colleagues who have supported us over the years. We’ve had a wild and wonderful journey!”
This means that PlayStation London joins the list of studios that had to suffer from Sony’s wave of layoffs. Other candidates include Spider-Man studio Insomniac and Last of Us developer Naughty Dog.
