A little over a year ago, the PlayStation VR 2 was released. After an aggressive marketing campaign and some laurels from the specialist press, the glasses quickly became quiet. Apparently it’s not nearly as successful as Sony would like.
There have been rumors in the past that the PlayStation VR 2 is a commercial flop for Sony. There was no official confirmation or denial of this fact, but the company seems to be thinking about expanding it to the PC. Of course, this could be an indication that Sony wants to boost sales by expanding the potential target group.

Now there are still rumors about the PlayStation VR 2 and they once again speak for themselves. According to Bloomberg journalist Takashi Mochizuki, Sony has stopped production of the glasses for the time being. The reason for this is that inventory levels are too high due to weak sales figures.
Mochizuki wants this information from internal sources and if we look at Bloomberg’s hit rate when it comes to insider knowledge, we can probably believe the matter. When it was released in February 2023, an estimated two million units of the PlayStation VR 2 were produced, of which only half are believed to have been sold.
Only the company itself currently knows whether Sony wants to let the glasses die slowly but surely. In the past, PlayStation boss Jim Ryan, for example, stated that the PlayStation VR 2 is currently not a priority. The few fans have already expressed their dissatisfaction several times due to the lack of first-party titles for the device, and for many, the failure represents the poor state of virtual reality in the current gaming industry.
