In January 2022, Sony announced the first technical details for the PSVR 2 VR headset successor for the PlayStation 5. First pictures followed today!
Sony’s VR headset PlayStation VR is entering the second round on the current PS5 console. Today, the company finally nailed it when it came to design. For the first time, images of both the headset and the new controller were shown via the PlayStation Blog.
The company itself naturally speaks of a “beautiful new design” for the next-generation VR headset. The final draft of the PSVR 2 headset is – just like the PSVR2 Sense controller – held in a spherical design. The spherical shape is meant to represent the 360 degree view that you enter in virtual reality.
Incidentally, the design of the VR headset was also inspired by other PS5 products. “As our design team already came up with ideas for the next-gen VR headset while working on the PS5 console, you’ll notice some similarities in appearance. The PS5 console has flat edges because it’s placed on a flat surface. In contrast, the design of the PSVR 2 headset is more round because the user interacts with it directly. The DualSense controller and the Pulse 3D headset also have rounded edges accordingly.
All in all, the headset should not only become an attractive device in the living room, but ultimately also let you completely immerse yourself in the game worlds. Another focus was therefore also on ergonomics. Extensive tests have been carried out to ensure a comfortable fit. A “carefully balanced weight” and an adjustable headband should also make their contribution here.
The PSVR 2 headset is slightly slimmer and lighter than its predecessor and also offers other new features such as a lens adjustment wheel to adjust the distance between the lens and the eyes. The ventilation design has also been fundamentally revised.
There is still no release date for PlayStation VR 2. When the time comes, VR titles will be able to display in 4K HDR with state-of-the-art graphical rendering, improved tracking and the new Sense Technology features.
