Sony is well known and the PS4 and PS5 consoles are quite common in Japan, among other places. Based on this, a US senator calls for action against a Sony monopoly of 98 percent.
- US Senator Maria Cantwell is said to have learned of Sony’s 98 percent monopoly.
- However, this only exists in Japan and the number leaves out platforms such as PC and Switch.
- In addition, 96 percent of all PC games are designed for Windows.
The fact that Microsoft is planning to buy Activision Blizzard brings some people’s attention to the topics of video games and consoles like the PS4 and PS5, which otherwise don’t have too much to do with it.
How my city reported, US Senator Maria Cantwell is said to have been told that Sony controls a monopoly of 98 percent of the high-end games market in Japan.
The US politician condemned that the Japanese government did nothing against exclusive contracts and payments to publishers. She is even said to have spoken of absolutely anti-competitive behavior that must be addressed.
However, this point is problematic for various reasons. On the one hand, the politicians indirectly side with Microsoft by assuming that Sony has a monopoly that, according to Kotaku, only exists in Japan. It also completely excludes mobile games, PC and Nintendo Switch.
How big is your console knowledge?
Under what name was the NES released in Japan?
Microsoft is by no means as small as this statement shows, after all 96 percent of all PC games that appear are designed for Windows.
