According to digital sale dates, PS5 sales in the UK are up 300% compared to February last year.
First reported by Gamesindustry.biz, sales of the console are up significantly, while Xbox Series X/S sales are also up 21%, while Switch is down 15%
The Switch figures are understandable, given that the console is about six years old at this point, and the platform has released a smaller number of massive AAA titles than rivals from Sony and Microsoft. Xbox Series X/S continues to grow, which is great news, but why is PS5 seeing such a huge growth spurt over last year? It’s safe to say that Forspoken didn’t lead to a surge in sales.
The answer is likely to be supply. Throughout last year, the PS5 suffered severe supply shortages due to COVID 19 and a global shortage of electronic components. This puts the company at a disadvantage, and with consoles launching towards the end of 2020, this shortage will last almost all of 2021 and most of 2022!
As you can imagine, this resulted in lower sales in February 2022 than the world expected. However, the Xbox Series X was also released in November 2020, so didn’t its sales also increase?
According to VGCharts, the PS5 is the best-selling console in the UK in 2022. So this console might be just what UK gamers prefer. The answer to the surge in sales may lie in witchcraft, as digital sales figures also reveal staggering sales figures for the Hogwarts legacy.
According to the aforementioned report from Gamesindustry.biz, the game sold more than twice as much as Elden Ring during its launch week, and will outsell FromSoftware RPGs in just three weeks. It’s entirely possible that the game is a big driving force behind PS5 sales in the UK.
With that in mind, do you think the PS5 will be able to sustain this sales momentum? Or was it a flash in the pan, thanks to a bizarre game drop? Let us know what you think below!
