Playstation 5 be compatible with PlayStation VRAlthough Sony has announced that it is working on the next virtual reality device for its next generation console, ensuring that it will not be available next to the premiere of the machine. The Japanese company has published a paper and a video showing a prototype of remote control for virtual reality able to accurately recognize the finger movement.
In ACM Digital Library, a repository of academic papers from the Association for Computing Machinery, Kazuyuki Arimatsu and Hideki Mori of Sony Interactive Entertainment (the division of the company in charge of the PlayStation brand), have published their advances in the possible control for the next virtual reality helmet of the brand. As with any prototype or patent, it must be taken into account that the final product may not resemble, neither in appearance nor in functionality, to this test device.
The video shows two elongated controls that grip with the palm of the hand capable of recognizing the slightest movement of the fingers. In the demo, this is used to manipulate such delicate elements like the joints of a wooden doll, or to stack geometric shapes with physics.
A section of the video explains how the technology could be used to improve virtual reality communication, because it allows you to make gestures with your hands. It is even shown that the command will allow typing in a virtual world. Recognition is reliable even if the user wears rings or watch, or if your hand is sweaty.
Still, there is failures. For example, the device does not detect if fingers interlock, or the separation between them. It also has problems if power is applied to the remote. If it is very dirty, its accuracy decreases.
Patents point to wireless PSVR2
Although this is still a non-commercial prototype, in February of this year SIE patented a PlayStation VR controller with fingerprint recognition. Another patent from the end of 2019 describes PlayStation VR2 as a wireless helmet with player eye detection enhancements, something you will use to improve the image quality. A Sony manager spoke in the middle of last year about what they were thinking about various helmet models to access a wider audience.
