At the end of May, a teaser from the Microsoft Twitter account sparked speculation about the development of Psychonauts 3. Now the boss of Double Fine, Tim Schafer, has canceled any fan hopes. Because according to him, the studio is currently busy with something completely different.

Ahead of the Xbox Games Showcase in June 2023, Microsoft released a teaser that caused excitement among Psychonauts fans. Because if you interpreted the tweet in a certain way, then it indirectly announced Psychonauts 3. The presentation ran, but a new spin-off of the wacky jump-and-runs wasn’t shown. But that’s not all of the bad news.

In an interview, Tim Schafer, head of the Doubke Fine development studio, now stated very clearly that he is not working on Psychonauts 3. He hadn’t even known about Microsoft’s Twitter teaser.

When asked what was Double Fine doing right now, he had this to say: “We’ve been working on big games, which admittedly were very complex and difficult to develop, but we didn’t have any internal stress. The development of Psychonauts 1 was very difficult, but everyone on the team liked each other the whole time. It’s not about big games versus small games, it’s about our values as a company and whether we live up to them.”

Schafer also states that they are currently not working on major titles. Instead, Double Fine is currently developing smaller games, but larger projects will also come back. What exactly the studio is doing right now, he didn’t explain. Only one thing should be clear: the written values are strictly adhered to, whatever that may mean exactly.
