It’s good to be a Netflix subscriber this October. The SVOD service has just quickly added to its catalog the anime Dandadan, Ranma ½ and Dragon Ball Daima, season 2 of the South Korean series Hellbound, as well as the action film The Rebel Shadow, and that’s not all. A fantastic comedy with French stars is currently a hit. She is TOP 1 on the streaming platform while being torn to pieces from all sides.

The village falls asleep…

…and therefore Netflix subscribers. This month of October 2024, one of the most famous board games in the West and one of the sources of the worst disagreements between friends (along with Monopoly) is terrorizing the SVOD service with 278 million subscribers around the world. Already adapted for a film and even a video game, “The Werewolves of Thiercelieux” is the subject of a new cinematic adaptation…this time “Made in France”. Loups-Garous has been TOP 1 on Netflix since its release a few days ago, surpassing two other Netflix exclusives. He convinces too few viewers.

The “critics” are unleashed

The film, directed by François Uzan (Fiasco, Lupine), is presented as a comedy set in the well-known medieval fantasy universe of the game “The Werewolves of Thiercelieux”. In this version, The characters played by Franck Dubosc, Suzanne Clément, Jean Reno and the other family members are taken to a village at the end of the 15th century, victim of attacks by mythical creatures… werewolves. This Netflix original is number 1 in France, dividing critics (2.4/5 on AlloCiné) and disappointing the general public (1.9/5 on AlloCiné).

The enthusiasts find “a mix of entertaining moments and some surprises”, while the most resistant call this film a “cleanse” and believe that it is “neither done nor to be done”. Internationally, Loups-Garous does little better and saves what can be saved. On Letterboxb (a social network specializing in cinema), this feature film doesn’t even reach the average rating, with an impressive user rating of 2.2/5. One comment in particular suggests the worst: “The most unrealistic thing about the film isn’t the werewolves or the time travel, but the fact that Jean Reno plays Franck Dubosc’s father.”
