“The Movie Critic” was supposed to be Quentin Tarantino’s last film, but the director scrapped his plans. Tarantino’s spokesman now explains the reason.
- Quentin Tarantino wants to end his career after his 10th film.
- In 2023 he announced that film number 10 would be called “The Movie Critic”, but that idea is now off the table.
- Now people close to the director are revealing the reasons for the exit.
Star director Quentin Tarantino wants to say goodbye to his work as a director with a big bang, but his actually last film “The Movie Critic” is now history. The director himself has not yet released an official statement about the end of his film, but many in his immediate personal circle think they know the reasons for the end.
A longtime talent representative for Tarantino came forward, according to US magazine “The Hollywood Reporter” and said that the director has set himself the goal of ending his career at the peak of his creativity.
This put T arantino under so much pressure that he wrote and then rejected numerous scripts. One of them almost became a planned “Star Trek” film. This was supposed to be Tarantino’s last film, but he ultimately left that job to someone else.
According to a source close to Quentin Tarantino, the director is “a pure artist” whose original stories were all published in an era in which films from well-known franchises were released. He didn’t want to follow this trend with his last film, which is why “Kill Bill 3” and “Django Unchained 2” aren’t an option for him either.
With “The Movie Critic” the perfect project was apparently found, but as Tarantino said at the Adobe Max Creative Conference in 2016: “Not every film has to be made. Not every film should be made.” “The Movie Critic” probably gave him this feeling.
The reason we’ve heard more about The Movie Critic than Tarantino’s many other screenplays is perhaps because the director was writing about a true story that he personally experienced.
“The Movie Critic” was supposed to tell the story of a man who really existed, but who was never really known. The editor wrote reviews for a porn magazine in the 1970s. After Tarantino first shared his idea in 2023, many were initially not very impressed and, considering action hits like “Kill Bill,” were a little disappointed.
Even though there were rumors that Brad Pitt would return to his role as Cliff Booth from “Once Upon a Time…in Hollywood”, that didn’t erase the doubts. Paul Walter Hauser as the supposed leading actor wasn’t really enough to generate much enthusiasm either.
Ultimately, “The Movie Critic” also became one of the many ideas that Tarantino found not good enough.
An earlier statement from him also shows that the director is putting so much effort into the search for his last project. Tarantino said back in 2009 that he wanted to retire before his 60th birthday. Tarantino is now 61 and there is no end in sight after the end of “The Movie Critic”.
When we will see Tarantino’s last work is now up in the air again, because the first scene of “The Movie Critic” was actually supposed to be shot at the beginning of 2024, which is why we could probably have seen the film in the cinema in 2026.
