Redfall: Not meant to be like Left 4 Dead at all

Dead, left, meant, Redfall

Did Arkane Studios do themselves a favor with the Redfall gameplay presentation? More and more comparisons to Left 4 Dead or Back 4 Blood are coming up, and Bethesda and Arkane aren’t happy about it.

It seems like Arkane Studios and Bethesda are having a little trouble explaining their games. For a long time, even with Deathloop, nobody really knew what the game was supposed to be, and with Redfall, the first difficulties are already becoming apparent. Why?

The gameplay shown over the weekend and the information so far are more reminiscent of co-op games like Left 4 Dead or Back 4 Blood. That’s exactly what Redfall doesn’t want to be – at least Arkane and Bethesda vehemently resist the comparisons.

There are certainly similarities. After all, it is a first-person shooter that can be played cooperatively with up to four players, with vampires and similar creatures as opponents. Albeit with role-playing elements and an open game world.

Arkane boss Harvey Smith already emphasized that it is a story-based game that you can play alone or together with friends – who are not replaced by bots in the solo game.

Bethesda’s Pete Hines also chimed in again, emphasizing that the game isn’t just about combat, there are many things besides that. The interplay of the characters is also completely different than in the titles mentioned. Perhaps the developers should clarify this in future trailers and presentations.
