At the beginning of May, Bethesda and Arkane want to publish the fundamentally promising vampire shooter Redfall, but there is at least one controversy in the run-up: the online compulsion. The response to this has now prompted the makers to possibly reconsider this fact.
Some time ago it became known that the Redfall developed by Arkane Austin always requires an online connection, even if you are only playing single player. That had triggered little enthusiasm among players and sometimes also caused clearer criticism – and it seems to have reached the developers.
In an interview with Euro gamer
Finding a solution to this problem doesn’t seem to be that easy given Redfall’s advanced state. Because of this, Smith is unsure if the offline feature will be ready when the game launches on May 2nd, 2023. Should the whole thing become technically possible, a subsequent implementation would also be conceivable.
Smith also commented on why the online requirement was chosen in the first place. According to this, it should generally be easier for developers to access the game, which simplifies the implementation of in-game tweaks, for example.
The game director also gives an example of this: If a large number of players fell off a ladder at a certain point and simply died because of it, then you would quickly become aware of this through the online statistics and you could quickly tweak the code.
At the same time, far from such possibilities, he ruled out an in-game store or even microtransactions; So you don’t have to have any fears in this direction. However, Redfall should receive classic DLC packages, which you can then purchase via the Xbox Store, but which will also give you new, additional game content.
