That Modern Warfare 2 would be a financial success really shouldn’t surprise anyone. CoD MW from 2019 is considered one of the best Call of Duty ever and put the brand back on the road to success, not least thanks to Warzone.
Should the figures in the latest report of the financial journal Barron’s prove correct, it would still be a bang. According to anonymous Sources familiar with the matter
Activision already had copies worth a few days after the release $600 million sold. This would make Modern Warfare 2 the fastest-selling CoD in history.
Lawsuit against Activision Blizzard
Activision Blizzard is currently facing a lawsuit alleging sexism and unequal treatment of female employees. If the grievances play a role in your purchase decision, we have summarized all the information on the sexism lawsuit in a detailed article for you. You can read our attitude and consequences to the processes in a leading article on the Blizzard scandal by GameStar editor-in-chief Heiko Klinge.
Although these numbers are not official, Barron’s is considered a reputable source. But even they are not automatically immune to errors, so enjoy the info with a dose of caution. A huge success was already emerging – and can be estimated using other numbers.
Are you in the mood for a single-player shooter again, but don’t know if the new CoD will suit your taste? Our campaign test video gives you an idea of what to expect and what not:

Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2 Story Campaign Test Video
All signs point to mega success
Even before the release, around 100,000 players were playing the campaign at the same time on Steam alone. This was possible because pre-orderers got access to the single player story a week beforehand. That suggests a lot of pre-orders as for 100,000 concurrent players total sales should be in the millions.
Since the full release, the highest number of players on Steam is 260,000. Only on Steam, mind you, not including Battle.net and the consoles traditionally strong for the brand (last and current gen PS and Xbox). In view of these figures, the Barron’s report seems plausible.
Meanwhile, the buggy release of MW2 ensures that the Steam reviews are mixed. You can find out more in the article:
CoD Modern Warfare 2
Great player numbers, disappointed reviews
And the biggest sales driver hasn’t even appeared yet. With Warzone 2, the new Battle Royale will follow on November 16th, which will be playable for free, act as a sales platform for skins and even attack the extraction genre with DMZ.
Should Infinity Ward now get the numerous technical problems of CoD Modern Warfare 2 under control, there is hardly anything standing in the way of the next success story. Provided that the fans remain loyal to the game in the long run.
