The Resident Evil saga had capsized for many years after presenting installments that were among the most highly rated games we can remember. A couple of installments too focused on the action and a negative response from the fans served to make Capcom stop and consider the new generation of Xbox One and PlayStation 4 differently.
Resident Evil 7 recovered the survival horror component, the puzzles and a much more focused approach to fear and closed spaces than action as such. That game was joined by the announcement of a Remake, that of Resident Evil 2. The RE Engine, an engine created by Capcom to do wonders for today's generation It was going to serve to bring back the 1998 game and as we learned in late 2019, Resident Evil 3 was also going to enjoy its remake.
If the original Resident Evil 3 was created with what was "left over" from Resident Evil 2 and was raised a game much more focused on action than the previous installmentSomething similar has happened with the remakes, since Resident Evil 2 and 3 Remake feed each other, both being set in the same place and on the same days, the fateful September 30 and October 1, 1998 in Raccoon City.
Resident Evil 3 is the long-awaited remake of the 1999 game and whose biggest rival is precisely the remake of Resident Evil 2, released last 2019. Those who enjoyed the puzzles, the overwhelming and the pure and simple survival more will see how in this installment we have a more action-oriented proposal, which doesn't mean it's worse, but that exactly reproduces the drift that the saga originally took in 1999. Join us in our Resident Evil 3 review.
Raccoon City, again
Jill valentine She is once again the protagonist in a main installment of Resident Evil after the award-winning first part, now with a new face and on a new mission, she is being held in Raccoon City. Several nightmares haunt his existence, the blame, probably, being the events he had to witness in the Arklay Mountains. As a STARS member, her existence is threatened by the mere fact that she knows too much about Umbrella, a corporation that has investigated for years with viruses and mutant agents and that once unleashed in Raccoon City does not hesitate to launch its most powerful weapon so far so that it hunts and eliminates once and for all all the STARS .
Like Jill, our goal in Resident Evil 3 is to survive. Although this time the focus of a big place to explore and spin around like in Resident Evil 2 is replaced by a more linear one, more "corridor" as it is usually called colloquially. This approach makes the development of the game progress as we advance, with a map in which backtracking and puzzles are almost completely eliminated.
3 protagonists
We must take into account that not only Jill will be the protagonist of the game. As we move forward with it we will also have playable phases with the other protagonist of the game, Carlos Oliveira, will take control. Precisely, it is the phases with this character that are the most survival and manage to cause us more anxiety and terror, since the places we visit (and that obviously we will not reveal) lend themselves to it. Despite that, we have a fairly large arsenal of weapons, as well as a lot of ammunition with which to deal with zombies.
With Jill Valentine we will have a great counterpoint in history and one of the features that make Resident Evil 3 an excellent game: Nemesis. Nemesis is a biological weapon created by Umbrella who is immortal. It regenerates easily, adapts to every combat and situation and on top it knows how to use weapons. It won't be long since we start to suffer with the appearances of Nemesis, although the big difference with Mr X from Resident Evil 2 is that these appearances are "scripted."
Let me explain, if in Resident Evil 2 we suffered while we explored because we knew that if we listened to a few steps it meant that Mr X was following us, In Resident Evil 3 we will know that Nemesis is following us because it is what he touches in that phase. As it is a more linear game and it consists of little exploration (I would say that most of the exploration takes place in the early stages of the game), if Nemesis follows us he will do so until it ends in a final meeting, before moving on to a zone in which it does not follow us, and then it follows us again, thus repeating the cycle.
Without Nemesis you can't understand Resident Evil 3But we can expect from him the role of a more traditional villain, the one we must defeat in boss confrontations instead of a being that follows us at all times while exploring the same place. If you put Mr X and Nemesis face to face, I will keep the latter for the simple reason that he is more "boss" than the other, since Mr X is simply an addition that causes anxiety to the player at his insistence, with some final confrontations that only occur in the final stretch of the game.
Nemesis gives us quite a few battles where you think the next one can't go any furtherSince what you have just experienced is one of the most epic things you remember, that feeling grows until the final confrontation, which – without going into much detail – makes several winks to that of Resident Evil 7.
The comparisons are hateful
The biggest problem Resident Evil 3 will have is when they put it face to face with Resident Evil 2. The 2019 game is much more complete, with smarter development and better resource management. If you played Resident Evil 2 and you missed something more of action and spectacular, you will like Resident Evil 3 much more, you must be clear about that. It's funny, because both games are more than related since you will see explanations of why a certain thing happens in the police station, why such a character is in those conditions … but at the same time they are two very different proposals.
Resident Evil 3 advocates spectacularity, with a good handful of cinematic scenes, so many that on some occasions we would have appreciated putting ourselves at the controls in one of them to experience that moment first hand. But that is part of its charm, action and cinematic game feel. In turn, too Resident Evil 2 full gameplay inherited, with a more refined targeting system, the same inventory system, documents and maps and a crucial element for dynamic gameplay is added, the feint.
Pressing R1 we can feint to the side, which allows us to instantly dodge an attack. If on top we do it at the right time and aim, we get a "bullet time" that we can use to shoot more calmly or accurately, or leave a feint with higher speed to run more, it all depends on our approach.
Another inherited element is the RE Engine, a technical marvel that has left us games like Resident Evil 7, Resident Evil 2, Devil May Cry V and Resident Evil 3. In each game Capcom is improving and already I can assure you that at 60fps you will not see anything better on PS4 or PS4 Pro. The Capcom title has moments that leave you breathless, with spectacular image quality, reflections, lighting and above all some facial animations that are unrivaled. Seeing how the muscles of the face move with each grimace, as they speak, expressions … it is quite a spectacle.
Also with online
Resident Evil 3 includes Resident Evil Resistance, an online game oriented title where 4 players must cooperate to advance through some rooms, while another player plays Mastermind, hindering those players. The scheme is similar to that of games like Dead by Daylight, with the difference that here the enemy is not "face-to-face", but rather acts as a behind-the-screen mind organizing zombies, traps and more.
We could not play what we would have liked in this way, since the servers were not for the work, so we cannot form a very elaborate opinion beyond what little we have played and the previous hours that we could dedicate to the event at the beginning of the month.
Resident Evil Resistance is more an addition to complement the short duration of Resident Evil 3 than a more mature proposal that could be released separately. Capcom must polish the performance of the title, especially its servers, as well as launching new content that does not end up making the title repetitive and that is forgotten.
A great survival and action game
Resident Evil 3 is an excellent game, but its biggest drawback is the one that dragged the original, the turn to action. Although this hits for some, it is perhaps an improvement for the others, among which I am. As much as I appreciate Resident Evil 2's insight and smart way of developing, Resident Evil 3 is more entertaining to me due to the fact that the action accompanies the story more and it has a good number of cinematics that provide more consistency to the plot.
To top it off, I wouldn't want to forget about excellent dubbing that the game has, with the voice actress who voices Sansa Stark dubbing Jill Valentine, as well as many other recognizable voices in the cast. This dubbing goes perfectly with a sound section that is much better to enjoy with headphones or a surround sound system, to fully enjoy every nuance.
Conclusion, Resident Evil 3 is the remake that the 1999 game deserved, with the most interesting additions and a depth in its plot that expands the experience of Resident Evil 2 and "closes" the plot of Raccoon City perfectly. The biggest drawback that we can attribute to it is that comparing it with a masterpiece like Resident Evil 2 is something in which 98% of the games come out missing and that those fans of a more classic survival proposal will find the same thing that they experienced in 1999 , a more action-oriented game, but without forgetting the essence of the saga and with many moments that will freeze our blood.
