The already flopped mobile versions of Resident Evil will probably have an even harder time in the future – thanks to a new online requirement.
It’s an open secret that the mobile ports of the AAA titles Resident Evil 4, Resident Evil 7: Biohazard and Resident Evil: Village for current smartphones are a commercial flop and have extremely modest sales figures. However, a turnaround for Capcom is now likely to be a little more difficult, because an online requirement is rarely well received in gaming circles – and that is exactly what seems to have been introduced here.
Now, it’s nothing unusual for mobile titles to require an internet connection these days. However, for single-player titles like the three Resident Evil games, this isn’t absolutely necessary. That wasn’t the case before, but after new updates, all three games apparently only run when there’s an active internet connection.
The description of the update only states: “Due to changes in the start-up process, an internet connection is now required when starting the app.” What the specific background is, for example whether a DRM check is behind it, is something we can only speculate about.
