You can prevent false triggers and make sure you have a handy save before starting Chapter 12. The workaround is posted below the video and is as spoiler-free as possible.
To prevent this from happening, Capcom says not to attack with a knife until a notification to get the item appears in the upper right corner of the screen.
Once the item is acquired, it will appear in the Key Items and Treasures menu in Leon’s Briefcase. If it does not appear, you will need to reload the saved data from before Chapter 12 started.
Capcom says it plans to fix this issue in a future update and apologizes for the inconvenience. The good news is that if you experience an error after applying the patch, you can continue playing with the save data where the error occurred before.
